Course Outline

This Apprentice Preparatory Course in Building Trades PLC course allows graduates to gain an appreciation of the range of building trades and gain experience in a variety of different trades and the skills required in each.


Fees

GCC Student Services Fee of €175 applies to all learners.
€200 Government Levy Fee applies to all learners except:

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).
  • Those in receipt of a SUSI Grant.
  • Those on a VTOS scheme.

An exam free of €50 for QQI Level 5 and €80 for QQI Level 6 applies to all learners except

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).

Non EU Students are subject to an International Fee.

We advise non-EU citizens living outside Ireland to contact the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service on www.inisgov.ie to ensure the course you are considering applying for is eligible for a student visa. Non-EU citizens living in Ireland are welcome to apply and require a PPS number (Personal Public Service Number). Work Experience

You'll get your first taste of the world of work and have an experience in a 'live' environment, away from college that will allow you to develop employability skills.

Experience will be gleaned from working independently and/or as part of a team to boost your confidence and develop new capabilities and will help you decide on and plan for a future career in a more realistic and informed way.


Special Features

Graduates will gain an appreciation of a range of different trades and gather experience while working with different technologies and applications associated with both construction and engineering. Graduates of this Pre-Apprenticeship in building trades course could progress to other Higher Education Institutions to further their studies.


Entry Requirements

QQI Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.

Course Modules

The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to apply structural principles and techniques to the construction of a domestic dwelling.
This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.
The module is designed to give the learner an understanding of the role of computers as a design tool for architecture, engineering and interior design.
Learners who successfully complete this module will develop safe working practices and become familiar with a variety of engineering processes. They will develop competence in the use of tools and equipment associated with a range of engineering processes, develop good work practices and appreciate the importance of accuracy in engineering processes
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work under supervision and with others to carry home repairs and maintenance so as to increase their skill set and employability.
The programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to apply a broad range of mathematical skills and tools to a wide variety of contexts, with some theoretical understanding.

The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to promote and maintain safety and health in a work environment.

This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

Progression Routes

The course will provide you with a qualification that has many applications within the building industry. Students may also further their education by attending third-level. This course prepares students for direct entry to: Apprentice Brick and Stonelaying, Carpentry and Joinery, Painting and Decorating, Plastering, Plumbing, Stonecutting and Stonemasonry, Wood Manufacturing and Finishing and Metal Fabrication

Career Opportunities

This course will provide the student with a qualification that has many applications within the construction and renewable energy industries. Students may also further their education by progressing to third level Universities.
