Course Outline

Students will gain the knowledge base and practical experience required by a health fitness professional in todays leisure industry. Successful students will be proficient in areas such as screening, fitness testing, programme development, class instruction and the general day to day running of a gym or leisure centre. They will acquire the relevant knowledge in anatomy, physiology and nutrition to ensure they are competent in their delivery of safe and effective fitness programmes.


Fees

GCC Registration Fee of €250 applies to all learners.
€200 Government Levy Fee applies to all learners except:

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).
  • Those in receipt of a SUSI Grant.
  • Those on a VTOS scheme.

An exam free of €50 for QQI Level 5 and €80 for QQI Level 6 applies to all learners except

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).

Additional Course Costs €300

Price includes;

  • Pool Lifeguard Qualification NGB
  • Accreditation & Certification

Additional certification may incur additional fee


Non EU Students are subject to an International Fee.

Work Experience

This course provides the student with the opportunity to work with local gyms and leisure centers. Links developed here may benefit the student in their vocational area.

Additional qualifications are available for eligible students and awarded by the following accredited bodies.

These include;

ITEC, NCEF, National Sporting Governing Bodies, Galway City Sports Partnership, Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) and Sport Ireland.Additional Certification may incur additional fees.


Entry Requirements

QQI Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.

Course Modules

This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.
Topics include anatomy and physiology, class instruction, healthy lifestyle and wellness, circuits, exercise to music, step aerobics, flexibility and body conditioning
Topics include the day to day running of a leisure centre, health and safety policies, marketing, customer care, code of ethics and special populations in the fitness industry
Topics covered include components of a balanced diet and sports specific nutrition.
Basic First aid, CPR and AED training included.
This programme module aims to equip the learner with knowledge of human anatomy and physiology and how it is relavent to participation in sports and exercise
Topics include issues in sport such as history of sport, gender, equality, drugs, media, sponsorship. Practical element covers circuit training, resistance training and body conditioning classes
This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.
