Course Outline

The QQI Level 6 Music course will provide students with the appropriate knowledge and a skill base in the music industry. Strong emphasis is given to music performance as a double credit module and this is supported with music theory and sound engineering.

Fees

GCC Registration Fee of €250 applies to all learners.
€200 Government Levy Fee applies to all learners except:

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).
  • Those in receipt of a SUSI Grant.
  • Those on a VTOS scheme.

An exam free of €50 for QQI Level 5 and €80 for QQI Level 6 applies to all learners except

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).

Non EU Students are subject to an International Fee.

Work Experience

Work experience takes place throughout the academic year in different areas of the music industry including recording, concerts, sessions, teaching or event production.

Entry Requirements

QQI Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at the time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.

Students are expected to play their chosen instrument/voice to a high performance standard. Auditions take place at the end of August where applicants are required to perform two short and contrasting pieces.

Course Modules

This programme aims to equip the learner with the skills and knowledge to devise, produce, manage and evaluate an event competently.
Students will learn to rehearse effectively considering repertoire, communication, and technique, leading to a number of live music performances directed by the student throughout the academic year.

Students cover a wide range of music theory in this module, always relating it to their instrument to gain functional musicianship. The module covers aural training and awareness and advanced harmony.
This programme aims to provide the learner with the specialised skills, competence and knowledge to work independently in both live and studio audio environments.
This programme module aims to provide the learner with a comprehensive range of skills with detailed theoretical understanding of a general supervisory nature of the work placement in a specific vocational area.

Career Opportunities

Previous students have gained part-time employment as sessions musicians as well as freelance work with a variety of bands and ensembles. A number of students are currently working full-time in the area of music performance and production.
