Course Outline

The course is designed to provide the learner with a good foundation in Science and Math’s, along with practical laboratory experience. There is a focus on bio medical knowledge, sterilization techniques, material science and good communication skills.

Work Experience

This will take place in the laboratories of industries e.g. biomedical, pharmaceuticals, food sciences as well as some public institutions. Work experience gives students a clear idea of what they can expect in a career in a modern laboratory or industry.

Special Features

This course will provide the learner with both knowledge and experience in general sciences with a specific focus on biomedical/pharmaceutical science.

Students will visit and gain work experience working with some of the many established bio medical companies here in Galway.

Entry Requirements

FETAC Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.

Course Modules

This programme module aims to provide the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to independently apply concepts and principals of biology in a laboratory and in the field in a managed environment.
This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to independently apply concepts and principles of chemistry in the laboratory and in everyday experience and industrial processes.
This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.
This programme module aims to introduce the learner to a broad range of laboratory skills so they can use equipment & materials to conduct experiments under relevant safe & health regulations in any science laboratory environment
This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence of the structure, properties and applications of engineering and construction materials. The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence in the area of science to work independently and under supervision in any science laboratory related industry, environment or in the field.
The programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to apply a broad range of mathematical skills and tools to a wide variety of contexts, with some theoretical understanding.
This programme module aims to furnish the learner with the skill set, knowledge and competence to work in decontamination/endoscope/dental reprocessing units, cleaning and decontaminating reusable invasive medical devices (RIMD) in the Health Services/ Sector, as well public, private hospitals and commercial super decontamination centers.
This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

Progression Routes

Students may use this course as an entry into employment in the biomedical/Pharmaceutical sector or as entry requirements to third level science courses.

This includes limited places in
GMIT degree programs including Applied Biology and Biopharmaceutical Science Chemical and Pharmaceutical Science
