Course Outline

The Theatre Performance PLC course is now introducing an additional qualification in Speech and Drama teaching; a Diploma of Associate (Teaching) awarded by the Irish Board of Speech and Drama for an additional fee.   This award provides initial professional training to enable the student with a strong interest in speech, drama, and communications to pursue a career in drama teaching or continue to further education at third level.

Students will have the opportunity to explore subject areas and develop skills in Speech, Direction & Devising a Speech and Drama Curriculum, Poetry, Storytelling,  Puppetry, Mime and Movement to name but a few. The students are requested to gain work experience in this field for example in such areas as After school service & Early Learning Centres, Performing Arts or Speech & Drama Schools.

All students will follow the  Theatre Performance Course, which is highly practical & performance based. There are four mainstage productions in the college calendar, along with acting opportunities in Film. It is a rigorous test of knowledge and understanding of key historical and theoretical aspects of speech and drama, providing a foundation for further study. The type of student who wishes to pursue this course must be highly self-motivated with a keen interest in the subject area, desirably having experience and learning in Speech and Drama.


Fees

GCC Student Services Fee of €175 applies to all learners.
€200 Government Levy Fee applies to all learners except:

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).
  • Those in receipt of a SUSI Grant.
  • Those on a VTOS scheme.

An exam free of €50 for QQI Level 5 and €80 for QQI Level 6 applies to all learners except

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).

Irish Board & Speech & Drama Diploma Fee €380 approx.(Subject to change)

Entry Requirements

QQI Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.

Course Modules

This program covers the full spectrum of skills training needed to succeed as a screen actor: acting, voice, movement, improvisation, and script analysis. Students will learn what it takes to express themselves through the art and craft of screen acting, gain on-camera confidence and learn how to shine at an audition.
As part of the Acting Skills and Techniques module students will gain valuable acting experience performing onstage in two public performances, a devised show and a scripted production. Throughout the year students will be introduced to a comprehensive range of acting skills and techniques.
This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.
Students will develop excellent practice in rehearsal and ensemble work. They will gain experience in Audition and Interview technique with attention to character development, interpretation and performance.
Students will acquire skills in Stage Management and Administration. This module explores important aspects of staging theatre productions and gives practical hands on experience in production management.
Throughout this module students will gain a clear understanding of the skills needed to work in theatre and an extensive knowledge and analysis of the different aspects of theatre and drama.
This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.
