Course Outline

This Level 5 Computer Programming course gives student an excellent Introduction to computer programming. Students will be given an introduction to varied aspects of the IT industry such as Software Architecture, Operation Systems and Object Orientated Programming. Students develop practical skills and can progress to our QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Software Development.


Fees

GCC Student Services Fee of €175 applies to all learners.
€200 Government Levy Fee applies to all learners except:

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).
  • Those in receipt of a SUSI Grant.
  • Those on a VTOS scheme.

An exam free of €50 for QQI Level 5 and €80 for QQI Level 6 applies to all learners except

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).

Non EU Students are subject to an International Fee.

Work Experience

Work experience takes place throughout the academic year. Two days per week students gain practical and supervised experience working in the IT industry.

QQI Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.

Course Modules

This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.

The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to construct computer programs using industry standard object oriented concepts.
The aim of this module to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence necessary to work independently and under supervision in a games development work environment or to progress to further or higher education and training.
The purpose of this award is to certify relevant knowledge, skill and competence to apply a broad range of mathematical skills and tools to a wide variety of contexts especially in software development and/or working with computer systems and networks.
The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to configure, utilise and maintain mainstream computer operating systems.
The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to understand the software development life cycle for a range of projects and introduce industry-standard tools and techniques for implementing appropriate software solutions.
This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

Students may use this course as an entry into employment to the booming IT sector or as entry requirements to third level IT courses.
