Galway Community College have a long established relationship with I.E.S. Félix Muriel , a secondary school in Rianxo, northern Spain. Both schools have worked together on a number of educational projects through the Erasmus programme. Six staff members from GCC visited the school this May and met with the school's principal Ramón Veiga to review past collaborations and discuss future possibilities.
Ramón organised multiple visits for the GCC staff to the Galician college where they sat in on classes studying Childcare, Galician culture, History, Art, Horticulture / Biodiversity, Additional needs support, Science and IT.
Review meetings were held with various I.E.S. Félix Muriel staff members to discuss areas of common interest on which both colleges could collaborate on. Both colleges have worked on biodiversity initiatives and the impact of climate change on locally endangered species. The connections between Galician and Celtic cultures such as language, music and history are areas which will be explored for possible collaboration in the future.
The GCC enjoyed a visit to the Botanic Gardens in Pardon and visited the sports centre in La Coruna where the connections between hurling and Pelota were explored.
