GCC flying the Flag for UN veterans and future generations
Galway Community College paused to reflect on the legacy of those who served and died while on UN duty on Wednesday, the Niemba ambush anniversary. 9 Irish UN peacekeepers were killed in the Niemba ambush in the Congo on the 8th of November 1960. The college has a long attachment to Renmore Barracks and has campaigned strongly on behalf of the Siege of Jadotville veterans since 2016.
Lt. Ciaran Higgins lead a military tribute in front of Siege of Jadotville veteran Charlie Cooley. The UN and Irish flags were raised at 12 noon as a moment silence was observed.
Charlie was invited to meet a Junior Cert History class by students Kieran McDonagh and Michael Mongan who are doing their Classroom Based Assessment on Charlie's experiences during the Siege of Jadotville.
The event also looked forward to a brighter future for the college as "Fly your Flag for GCC" winner,Leaving Cert student, Ivan Mischenko, raised the flag he designed. The internal school flag competition was supported by Mary McHugh and her team at Galway City Partnership. Students were encouraged to visualise how they see GCC.
Ivan's flag has the Galway Hooker, the symbol of our college at the heart of his design. There were artistic references Croagh Patrick in the flags imagery symbolising our migrant nature and our ability as a nation to welcome people.
The Mayor of Galway, Mr. Eddie Hoare and GRETB CEO, Mr. David Leahy, members of Galway City Partnership were warmly welcomed by Galway Community College principal Mr.Brian Melia.
Accomplished harpist, Siobhan McDonagh, a Bio Medical PLC student, performed an emotive piece as college Chaplain Adrian McGrath reflected on the sacrifices of our UN soldiers while dreaming of a peaceful and hope filled future for all.
