Suaimhneas
Our Suaimhneas room is a co-educational setting. It was established in September 2018 and supports students with ASD. Our room provides an inclusive education, promoting integration between our room and the mainstream class. The student is at the centre of our classroom, their learning needs are assessed and individualised plans are created.
Our room includes a reading area, bean bag – chill zone, sensory toys, computers, individual and group work stations, storage and locker area. The room is a safe and comfortable space for our students to be themselves, to regulate, to seek advice or support and to develop their special interests.
We use a variety of ASD structures in our room such as TEACCH, PECs, Social Stories and ABA principles. Programmes delivered include Social Skills, Peer Mentoring, Emotional Literacy, Communication, Numeracy, Puberty and RSE, Sensory Processing and Curriculum Support.
Communication between home and school is important to the development of the student. At Galway Community College, we like to work together as a team to guide our students towards their full potential. We welcome contact with external agencies and link regularly with services such as Speech and Language therapists, Occupational therapists, Occupational Health, Family Support, Psychologists etc.
